The speedy blue hedgehog is back for another popcorn flick, the next level of adventure movie, powered by its own innovation.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 finds Sonic settled in Green Hills, eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns, in search of an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own assistant, Tails, and together they embark on a globetrotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into dishonest hands. The result is a cool, amusing treat, easily coupling heartfelt moments with the flawless sum of comedic cheerfulness that will make it fun for all the family.
The story is as simple as it is it is shrewd and, to top it off, the OTT mania of the singular Jim Carrey gives audiences every reason to laugh with hysterical dialogue and slapstick gags; nothing in the film works perfectly, but its humour, its thrills.
Blending animated characters in a live-action setting is seamless and super high-tech, and it still ground-breaking visual effects. What struck me immediately- is the intricacy of the detail; the great care Jeff Fowler took with the small things within the grand setting. Technology has advanced significantly and “Sonic 2” dazzles in the vanguard. The opening sequence awes through its invention and pacing — the planet mushrooms, and how we get into that world, how that builds little by little until it becomes a drop of something falling into Jim Carrey’s glass and it all starts in classic slapstick-comedy fashion. The film does not lose its way trying to pretend it is deeper that it is: The world is threatened by even bad guys, and we need heroes. Recalling something that Jim Carey said about his devastating caricatures of Donald Trump: “It’s not a choice to be doing the cartoons. I'm doing (them) because I can't just watch this nightmare unfold".
After this Sonic 2, we are left eagerly awaiting Sonic 3.
