Small Things Like These: A Sensitive Exploration of Difficult Subject Matter

The Berlinale opener “Small Things Like These” is a passion project which tackles difficult subject matter with significant star power. Leading man is Oscar nominated Cillian Murphy and the power producer behind the film is Matt Damon. This story of fallen women who fall into the a rather heartless Irish system for woman pregnant out of wedlock tackles a searing subject.

Screenwriter Edna Walsh and producer Kevin Halloran - both Irish - spoke with conviction about this Irish issue which has for long been a taboo subject. Halloran spoke about use of Human League on the soundtrack which underscored the fact that the practices highlighted were current well into the Eighties.

Journalists also heard that it was on the set of blockbuster Oppenheimer that Matt Damon was passed the project by Co- Star Cillian Murphy. This quintessentially Irish based on a novel by Claire Keegan came to life o the set of a film about the atom bomb. The power players which subsequently attached gave this intimate story a big platform for a hidden story of many tormented lives.
